Earthoid began it's roots back in 1999 as one of the first WAP search engines in the world. Long since retired from searching, Earthoid once again is a search engine, this time a "energy saving search service".
How does Earthoid save energy?
"The amount of power consumed by a monitor when on is primarily a function of its type (CRT, LCD), screen size, and the image displayed. LCD monitors use less energy when on than CRT monitors of similar size. The larger the screen size, the more power a monitor uses when on; this applies to both CRT and LCD monitors (Nordman et al. 1997). Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
Department of Energy (DOE) Website rates the energy consumption of colors. "White and bright colors (especially in backgrounds) can use up to 20% more power than black or dark colors."
Earthoid got the idea of a energy saving search engine from "blackle.com" a Google search alternative. Like every good competitor, Earthoid now introduces a Yahoo! search engine which is also energy friendly.
As an added "energy saver" Earthoid allows all linked sites to be previewed by hovering over the eye icon on all search results. "Why waste energy on that lame white page, if you can preview it first!"
Even though Earthoid can not save the world, "Every bit counts!"
Do your part in saving energy consumption by using Earthoid, downloading our Vista Sidebar Gadget or adding Earthoid as your homepage.
